It's great but be aware of this shortcoming!
This is pertaining to Zoom's R16 / R24 product line.Love using it as a recorder on its own. Right out of the box we were laying down tracks without even referring to the manual much. The clarity of the sound is awesome!A page on the Samson website is very impressive claiming the R24 can server not only as a recorder, but also as a controller of a PC via the USB and this is what convinced me to purchase the R24, however keep in mind this is somewhat misleading.Although unclear, it appears there may be some problems with the 32 bit driver used in conjunction with Windows Xp or Vista also. This is why I feel that although impressive, the page on your website which boasts of the R24's ability to be used as something other than a recorder is not really a fair claim at this time. A bitter sweet situation to be sure. How long should the consumer be expected to wait before taking delivery of the full feature set?The hardware itself makes...

Mobile Studio
I have to say, the Zoom R24 is fantastic, as advertised it works independently, as well as connected to the computer.Independently.--------------Its plug and play, all 8 inputs take either XLR (mic inputs) or Quarter Inch (guitar inputs), you plug in, start a project & hit record, that simple. I even messed a little bit with the internal editing/cropping tool. I played a riff, edited it, and looped it, all with in the actual machine. The menu takes getting a little used to, and there is so much you can do with it. My housemate, another musician who has the same device, has EQ preset saved to his machine, which makes it easier for him to plug in, choose the preset, and play. That way it sounds just the way he likes it every time, & you can have multiple presets. The menu is pretty intuitive, I would recommend that you play with it, and go through the menu and have a little notebook to mark where certain things are, because there are a few :)With a...

Easy to learn and use
I used the Zoom R24 to record narration, acting dialogue and live music of choir, solos, piano, violins and my own guitar parts to create an Easter Program for our Church. The ease of learning and using the product was great. The quality was superb and the 16GB SD card I bought for it holds 48 hours of 44.1kHz 24-bit quality recording. All around great product. The flexibility of what to send to the headphone monitors also helped the different recording styles of different musicians and performers.

One of the best field recorders out there
Just like the customer above me, I have a fairly early model (serial 2211). I don't imagine them having any revisions or anything, because this unit is really solid. Let me start by saying that this device should not be considered a Mic in its own right. Sure, it has two condenser microphones stuck on top to record in stereo, but I wouldn't use these mics in any studio unless I had nothing better. This unit is for those people who want to record in the field, and be able to capture 4 tracks of audio in a handheld device.First, the build quality. Obviously Zoom took a lot of criticism to heart from their first H2 and H4 models. The H4n sports a "rubberized" hardshell design that's easy to grip, and seems to stand up well to surface scratches. (Mind you, the rubber texture can attract greasy fingerprints which can get annoying if you're a gadget freak like me). The top of the unit where the mics are is metal. There is some plastic on the unit, but definitely better designed...

Impressive with minor flaws
In looking for a portable handheld recorder for scratch tracks and samples, I weighed the benefits of a few of the handhelds available today and settled on the H4n. The other recorders on my short list were the Edirol R-09 and Sony PCM-D50, and also the H4. So far the H4n hasn't disappointed.I settled on the Zoom H4n for a couple of reasons:1) 1/4" and XLR inputs with phantom power - Very handy for throwing a mic on a kick and snare, and the H4n will record those plus the internal condensor simultaneously, which is perfect to get the rest of the drum kit for some quick loop scratch tracks.2) More geeked out features than the others - They are not needed but still fun to have. Just bought my second one!
Well, the title says a lot. I liked the first one so much, I bought another. My focus on this recorder is just that - to record. I have no plans to mix on this machine, so my review does not pertain to the many mixer or effects featues. (Although from other reviews I have read, they are great). It does an excellent job of recording.ProsLightweight - very portable.Uses batteries or adapter.Manual is very well written by someone with an excellent command of the English language.Excellent value.ConsNo MIDI whatsoever that I could figure out. One review I had read, hinted that it has some type of MIDI capabilities, but I couldn't find any. This is unimportant to me, but to some, it may be.Only 1 dedicated direct input for guitar. It would be nice to have at least 2, but of course you can record by microphone up to 7 more.

Great little starter project... I use it for a high school media class..and we can record just about anything we want.. use it as the audio interface for an Imac and run our studio monitors, garage band or cubase, and some good mics... we are set to go.
