Beautiful, informative, fun to read
I love reading books to my children, but I find that really great books are not always that easy to come by. By a really great book I mean something beautifully illustrated, easy and enjoyable for me to read out loud, and an interesting, educational subject. Of course my children (They are 4 and 6 and a half years old now, but I've been reading these books to them for over a year.) must enjoy the book too, otherwise I'll be reading my beautiful book to myself! I think in this backyard book series I have found all the aspects of a great children's book. The story is cute. It takes about the right amount of time to read aloud. It's educational in a very real way. (There are snails all over my garden for my children to see, and touch.) Now they know all about how snails live and what they really are. I'm looking forward to buying, and reading, more books in the series.

a great find...
My 2 year old was going through a fear of insects (and snails) phase and this book helped tremendously. Not only did it educate her on the life cycle of the snail, but it did so without talking down to her. I read it to her 7 times when we first got it and right away her attitude toward snails changed. Now, she is quite happy to go visit them as they munch away on our garden vegetables...

First Steps Into the World of Science
A beautifully illustrated picture book with just enough text to intrigue the preschooler or introduce the grade schooler to the world of a snail. As an elementary school teacher I recommend this book for an introduction to scientific studies of animal families as well as a motivational tool for writing lessons. Great for pre-kindergarten thru 3rd grades.

Science rocks
I have taught preschool for over 15 years - the books in this series are wonderful. Great illustrations with easy to understand text. The kids love them and will sit and "read" them to each other over and over again. Anything that promotes a love of science and knowledge is tops in my book.

Great Science and a Charming Read!
I'm a fan of all things wriggly, squiggly and slimy, but even if you're not there's something for everyone in this book. Gordon brings the reader through the science of snails and slugs, with detailed information about common species found in North America and gets into their biology and life history. But throughout the book there are anecdotes from scientists who work with these animals all the time, poems, quotes and interesting factoids. Fildes' illustrations are at once full of personality and reminiscent of an old school lab book; they're fantastic.Gordon (a.k.a. The Bug Chef) also explores snails and slugs as food sources. Need a recipe for escargot? It's in here. Want to keep them in captivity, as a slower, lower-maintenance relaxation fish tank? Gordon writes about the set-up and care of these animals as pets. Are you a gardener who fights with these mollusks over your tomatoes? This book provides some answers and some information on what snails and slugs...

Uplifting and fascinating, with no hidden agenda
"...the snail had emerged from its shell into the alien territory of my room, with no clue as to where it was or how it had arrived; the lack of vegetation and the desertlike surroundings must have seemed strange. The snail and I were both living in altered landscapes not of our choosing; I figured we shared a sense of loss and displacement."Elisabeth Tova Bailey was in her mid-thirties when struck with a mysterious illness that soon led to her complete incapacitation. Without knowing the cause, much less the cure or the course that it might take, the disease was a frightening visitor. One day, a friend stops by with a rather odd gift. A snail, from out in the yard. First placed in a flower pot and eventually a terrarium, the snail becomes Bailey's constant companion. Because of her lack of mobility and energy, much of her time was spent observing the creature. You might think this would be dull, or worse, that you'd be stuck listening to someone bleakly...

A Healing Book
The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey is a healing book. While a woman recovers from a life-threatening condition she has the time and patience to observe one small wild snail. Her thoughts, research, and experiences help her, and us, to heal our damaged relationship with the world of nature. The result of careful and heartfelt observation of even the smallest bit of life can not only enrich a life but also find and give life anew. This book is the perfect gift for anyone recovering from a set-back or in need of inspiration. I love how Elizabeth, while appreciating the small things of life, also brings in haiku. Perfect.

Product Description

In a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature, Elisabeth Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her uncommon encounter with a Neohelix albolabris --a common woodland snail.

While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater under standing of her own confined place in the world.

Intrigued by the snail's molluscan anatomy, cryptic defenses, clear decision making, hydraulic locomotion, and mysterious courtship activities, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer, providing a candid and engaging look into the curious life of this underappreciated small animal.

Told with wit and grace, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience, showing us how a small part of the natural world illuminates our own human existence and provides an appreciation of what it means to be fully alive. Top to learn more

A truly quirky memoir
The Sound of Wild Snail Eating is not your typical memoir or inspirational novel. Nor will you expect to hear much talk about finding God in between these pages. Elisabeth Tova Bailey takes us on a brief journey through her life and the mysterious disease that leaves her in a state of paralysis. Not being able to stand or walk or even sit up in bed, you would think that her life was over and yet when she begins observing the life of a small woodland snail, she finds meaning not only in herself but in our own species.I really enjoyed reading this story even though it is based entirely on snail watching. I did not know much about the book before I contacted the publisher and even if you read the synopsis, you would still be surprised by the story in front of you. The Sound of Wild Snail Eating is a truly quirky memoir and Bailey is a very resilient, courageous woman. It was painful reading about how debilitating her mysterious disease left her. Even worse was reading the...

Snails

The last reported outbreak and eradication of the Giant African land snail in Florida occurred in 1966 when a boy smuggled three Giant African land snails into Miami as pets. The state is collecting snails when they are found, and is working through a program to use a bait called “Sluggo” to kill the snails. Each snail can live as long as 9 years, and produce as many as 12 hundred eggs a year.

It’s that time of year again, when a bunch of us get together to take on the gem that is Littlestone Golf Club in Kent, England to play 72 holes in one day, walking and carrying our golf bags, and counting every stroke in four medal rounds. He said cricketers who keep playing badly aren’t very clever because if they were they’d figure out how to play better. ” Montgomerie was speaking in his role as president of the Golf Foundation, an organization that does a sterling job of introducing kids to golf. When he lived in England he practiced at The Wisley Golf Club, an up-market club just outside London. The range of estimated times for 18 holes tells you this club is not for snails. I was given options from two hours and 20 minutes to two hours 45, at five-minute intervals. He and his partner will have no problem getting round Littlestone in an average of two hours and 20 minutes per round. It’s my job, along with the Golf Foundation, to break down that barrier and get school kids to play the game. Monty’s mixed message: I had to laugh when I heard Colin Montgomerie say “golf has had this elitist feel for too long. I am one of the “slower” 72 Club members, but only because my 9 handicap means I don’t hit it as straight as other members. The “slowest” time is 2:45, as in two hours and 45 minutes. How, after playing 30 years, with a 9 handicap, can I stand in the fairway 120 yards from the green and not get the ball on the putting surface. Monty also got married at the exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club in 2008. The entry form asked for a realistic estimate of how long it would take me to play each round.
