Product Description

Horseback Riding: The Complete Beginner’s Guide - All you need to know about horseback riding BEFORE you take lessons!

I can only assume that you are serious about horseback riding and want to start out the right way. You’ll hear me throughout this book talk about SAFETY, SAFETY, and SAFETY! You can never be too safe while being around these huge animals! We’ll discuss the safety issue in depth at different points in the book.

I know you must have lots of questions – that’s why have I prepared this book: To help anyone of any age to learn all the basics about horseback riding prior to getting on a horse for the first time. There are many things you need to understand before mounting and riding for the first time. This book will take you item by item through all of these critical concepts to help you understand how a horse thinks, how he’s made, his physical characteristics, etc. You will also have to prepare yourself both physically and mentally.

Riding horses is like no other sport - you see, if you play golf, tennis, swim, jog, play football or basketball, lift weights…. whatever it is (except for some team interaction) how well you do in that sport is pretty much determined by what YOU can do physically.

How much speed, strength, finesse, coordination, etc. you can develop determines how well you’ll do. But, when riding, you now have a partner—the horse—who, unlike a tennis racquet or golf club—has a mind of his own. Success depends on you working together as a team. Plus, your physical build and shape will also determine how well your horse can perform. Together you are a team and you can help each other out by being physically fit. Horseback riding also helps you develop specific muscle groups that are not worked regularly in other sports

In the horse world, your success is determined by how well you can control, understand and harmonize with a 1,000-pound animal that has superior strength, is faster and has a better-developed nervous system than you. The way you overcome these strengths in a horse is to understand what the horse’s limitations are.

Understanding the horse’s body, what makes him tick and how the horse’s brain works is the key to controlling him. If you don’t figure this out and understand the horse then you’ll constantly be fighting him and your experience will go sour.

Tremendous!
I have a substantial library of equestrian-related books, and this one certainly deserves pride of place. It is the best and most complete general guide to horse riding I've yet come across. The photographs are gorgeous and the production values superb. William Micklem writes very well and his explanations are very clear and thorough without being dry or pedantic. This really is about how to get the most out of riding, pure and simple. It isn't one of those ordinary, "how-to-groom-your-horse-compendium-of-breeds" picture books, and it delves into dressage, show jumping and cross-country in three separate but interlinked sections. I actually learned quite a few things reading this book. Experienced and beginner riders alike will enjoy it. Read it cover-to-cover, and savour the beatiful layout and illustrations. Completely awesome and highly recommended!

Fabulous, but not all horse sports are covered.
Doring Kindersley has pulled another coup. This is a fabulous book In the way of the D-K books, the photographs are very clean and function to exponentially increase the information transfer. While it says "complete horse riding manual", the book covers dressage, show jumping, and eventing. It would also be very useful for hunter riders.Cutting horse, reining, trail, and other Western judged events are not covered, nor is endurance riding. With that caveat, the book is more than worth the price. If I were running an English equestrian program, I'd provide this book for all my students so that we were all on the same page.

Completely Beautiful!
Not only is this a useful work, it's a work of art. This substantial book is packed with extraordinary pictures. Readers of all ages will either benefit from the clear, concise writing, or enjoy the full color photographs. The "complete" phrase is somewhat misleading, as it should be more of the "Complete ENGLISH Horse Riding Manual." Keep in mind that this book does orignate from the UK, where many disciplines that are common in the United States do not share the same rate of popularity. Regardless, it is a lovely book with something to offer riders of all levels, especially the beginner or novice. It is well worth it, accurate writing combined with a coffee table book appeal.

Product Description

Using his vast experience of training both riders and horses, William Micklem guides both novices and old hands through every stage of the riding process. Showing that the horse needs to be seen as a student and the rider a coach, as well as that mental preparation is just as important as the physical, The Complete Horse Riding Manual is filled with information and in-depth knowledge not found in other books. First Moxie Doll for my daughter
This is the first Moxie doll that I have gotten for my daughter and I have to say that it is a good quality doll. I really like the way that the shoes are made onto the doll and I don't have hundreds of tiny shoes all over the house as I do with the Barbie dolls that we own. I just wish they had more "characters".

Fun, and cute.
This doll is fun and cute. I would say it's a step up from barbies, or maybe just a bit different that keeps young girls more interested in playing with them. Good quality.

"Basic Horse Training - All You Need To Know To Safely Handle And Control Your Horse"

Newly Updated!
We've added a new chapter that includes additional horse training tips. Useful stuff you can use today to help make your horses safer and more fun to ride!

Thanks for your interest in this “Basic Horse Training” booklet as a horse lover and one interested in horse training.

What follows in the next few pages is a great summary of horseback riding/training basics. As you’ll see, this book will give you an excellent start.

All horses must be taught the basics of handling to be safe and enjoyable. Regardless of use, the horse must be taught to stop, back, turn, circle, go straight and be able to perform these maneuvers at all gaits.

Each event and activity requires the horse to specialize in a particular skill, but each horse must be well-trained and easily controlled to perform well.

Therefore, it is essential that all horsemen understand the basic concepts of training horses.

A loose horse moves in a relaxed, balanced and stylish manner. The job of the trainer is to simply indicate the desired maneuver and allow the horse to perform in its own natural balanced and stylish manner. To achieve this objective, the trainer communicates with subtle aids from the hands, legs, body and voice, and allows the horse to complete the maneuvers on its own.

Forcing the horse to perform results in loss of form, stiff unnatural action and confusion on the part of the horse. The desired result of any training program is a well-trained, responsive horse. The following concepts of teaching body control and the basic maneuvers required of the horse will assist horsemen in achieving this goal.

Brilliant visual artistry
Many have already addressed the plot of this film, so I will not not go into detail. However, I feel compelled to touch upon the visual storytelling in this film. Movies are first and foremost imagery. As many legendary filmmakers have said, a good film can be watched with the sound turned off and still communicate every bit of the story and emotion through the images alone. This includes cinematography but goes light years beyond lighting and framing a scene. Each shot must be planned and designed, from sets to props to location scouting, from blocking the actors' movements to using color and shapes, textures, and spatial relationships. All these must communicate the text and subtext simultaneously. I said all that to say this: Redford and his team blew me away with "The Horse Whisperer." The first act alone is filled with enough information in every corner of the screen to chew on for days. One example among dozens is the use of symmetry, parallel lines,...

Heals the heart, strengthens the spirit.
The Horse Whisperer is not a typical Hollywood movie. But then, none of the films Redford has directed, are in any way typical. The first time I really took notice of his work, was after seeing "A River Runs Through It". He had managed to tell a brutal, sad story in a mystical way that held me spell-bound. Whisperer takes that feeling one step further. It will hold you and then squeeze your heart till the tears come. This is not a sad film however. It is the story of a spiritual journey that a family makes with the aid of a talented guide, Tom Booker, (played by Redford himself). Each of them takes their own paths but make it through some trying times, emerging stronger than when they began. The story gets going as a result of a terrible accident involving two young girls who are out riding in icy, lightly forested terrain. The lone survivor, Grace, is traumatised by the loss of her friend, her foot and, in another way, her horse...

A Beautiful Movie
The Horse Whisperer is sucha beautiful film it takes your breath away. The film's stunning cinematography, it's awesome acting and great storyline make it a 4 star movie and one of the best of 1998.Scarlett Johnasson is the star of the show, she plays 14 year old Grace, a horse-lover who has just had a terrible accident with her friend. Her mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) helps her daughter and her horse, Pilgrim by taking her to a 'horse whisperer '(Robert Redford) who can heal horses. This is a very sad, beautiful and lovely movie and don't be put off by it's mammoth length (2 hours, 48 minutes) - to me it felt like 1 hour rather than 3.

This is a terrific book!
I'm getting back into riding after 30 years of an occasional trail ride, overweight and out of shape. My first few sessions were not so great, so the stable owner who is a centered riding certified instructor, gave me a few lessons on a longe line and bareback pad. What a difference! By studying the basics in Chapter 2, and focusing on how my body moves with the horse, I've become balanced and confident after just 3 hours of lessons. I'm not normally a fan of programs that use imaging to achieve results, but Ms. Swift appears to have hit on a method that puts me back in the saddle so both the horse and I are comfortable.

The Book I've Been Needing!
I have read book after book hoping to improve my riding. Some were too basic (Riding Essentials and Riding (by Decker) are great for beginners), others too obscure. Since my first time studying this book, my riding has improved immensely and the horses have been grateful! Visualization is so much easier than running thru a laundry list of cues. When I find my calves flailing at the canter, I just think of rooting like a tree and they become still. Examples like this abound, and my instructor has been very impressed as well. A great buy, and possibly the only book you need if your goal is just great daily riding, not to compete.

A great book for beginning or advanced riders.
As an adult just starting to ride, this book helped me to visualize how to balance and explained some useful riding techniques. It also made me aware of how a rider's body really affects her horse! Though sometimes difficult to do the exercises during a formal lesson, these techniques can be practiced and referred back to as I progress. Great pictures and instructor recommended.

Product Description

Widely known for her innovative teaching philosophy stressing body awareness, the value of "soft eyes," proper breathing, centering, and balance, Sally Swift has been a pioneering riding instructor for half a century. In book form for the first time, her methods enable horse and rider to achieve harmony, working together naturally, without pain.

Unlike traditional teachers, Sally Swift does not believe in forced training techniques that cause stiff bodies and tense riding. Instead, through the use of vivid, unusual, and highly creative images that transcend mechanics ("Pretend you're a spruce tree; the roots grow down from your center as the trunk grows up"), plus a thorough knowledge of human and equine anatomy, this wise and inspiring teacher enables the conscientious equestrian to reassess habitual responses, in order to ride in natural positions, break through frustrating plateaus, and achieve ever-rising goals with comfort, vitality, and precision.

Precise illustrations and photographs never before used in riding books explain anatomy and image work to give mind and body new and relaxed approaches to the inner process of riding.

Centered Riding is for those with little experience all the way up to world class.
