This book isn't a purchase, it's an investment
I have been meaning to write a review for this book for quite awhile, but when I found myself turning to it (yet again) last week after receiving a difficult diagnosis for my beloved geriatric dog, I thought it was time to sit down and express my appreciation for this book.I am not fond of reviews that insist I "must! " have this or that, so please forgive me if I sound strident in my insistence that this really "should! " be in the possession of everyone who has a dog to care for. Here lies information that can help you out of the trenches and decide when you should wake up your vet in the middle of the night, when to wait till morning, and when to try handling things yourself. This is also the place where I learned how to monitor my pets vitals so I can get an idea of what may be going on and to provide my vet with some of the information needed to hit the ground running. Out of the several pet care books I have (Pitcairn's being one of them)...

A money-saver for the conscientious dog owner
One of the most difficult tasks for the loving dog owner is deciding when a malady needs a vet's attention. This book helps to make this task easier. As a multiple big dog owner, I can't afford to run to the vet every time one of my dogs is not feeling his or her best. This book allows me to research a malady to help make the important decision: does my dog need to see a vet? This saves me money and gives me peace of mind. It also gives me the information I need to have an educated conversation with my vet about treatments, when and if they are necessary. It's like having an assistant on call 24 x 7.

If you own dogs, you should own this book!
This is by far the best health care guide for dogs. From the quick index of symptoms on the inside cover, to the great coverage of many diseases and disorders in canines, this is a well-written and easy to understand book, that goes beyond the basics most dog care books give you, without becoming too technical. My vet actually kept one on hand in his office for quick reference.

There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. A good reference
The Complete Healthy Dog Handbook by Betsy Brevitz is an excellent resource for pet owners. The beginning covers basics of dog ownership and temperament testing. She gives guidelines for both puppies and older dogs. I'm familiar with the puppy temperament testing from other books, but was glad to see a section for older dogs. She also breaks down the common complaints to most breeds. It is more extensive than what I've seen on the web, and should help prepare owners for possibilities, although, some of the conditions I would think would be rather rare in well bred dogs. The majority of the book covers basic health problems and care. Set up in a question answer format Dr. Brevitz explains in laymen's terms the various medical conditions. The first of each chapter gives an outline of what would be a major emergency and what can wait. This section alone could probably save pet owners considerable money at emergency vet clinics. The last couple of chapters deal with poison control and...

Now I know why my Aussie scoots....and if the more expensive lamb and rice is worth it
Betsy Brevitz's 'Complete Healthy Dog Handbook' is a great resource for the pet owner. It is divided into nineteen easy-to-use chapters where all the major dog care topics are discussed. General advice on dog care is provided - such as how to select a healthy puppy or deal with an aging dog or what kind of foods most dogs need - and specific medical problems are explained in an easy to comprehend style. The index is simple and easy to use: I looked up 'scooting' and quickly found the possible causes and treatment for my Aussie Terrier's latest behavior. This is a reliable, clearly written, inclusive book that would fit well in all conscientious dog owners' libraries.

Good book but ToC is not linked properly
I take off 1 star for the Kindle version. It has a ToC but not linked in "Go to". You have to go to the beginning and click forward 8 times to get to ToC and also some subject matter under ToC are not linked at all. So you have to go to the closest subject(with a working link) to what you intend to read and click forward to get there. I requested a refund for this and will just buy the hard copy.It is a great book to have if you have dogs.

Great book for better diet and health of dogs and cats!
You may see some of my other reviews about human health and nutrition, but this is perhaps THE book that prompted me to learn more about MY diet. Here's what I liked about the book:Dr. Pitcairn has a long career in the vetinarian industry. I enjoyed reading about his holistic approach to pet health and diet--treating the root cause, not the symptoms. I like the fact that Dr. Pitcairn chose to think outside the box, so to speak, and look for alternatives early in his career when he found that his patients did not always respond to drugs. Also, the recipes are excellent for ensuring a truly healthy diet.I can't think of anything that I did not like about the book.My story:I still remember the first time anyone had EVER mentioned to me that dog food is not good for dogs. My husband and I were adding a dog to our family and was going through an interview process with the breeder. She knew that we already have an older dog and...

Review from Kim Bloomer, Owner of Aspenbloom Pet Care
I recently obtained Dr. Pitcairn's book and found it to be a wonderful, easy to implement and understand book on natural care for dogs and cats. Dr. Pitcairn provides concise information on dogs and cats from what to feed, to training, and even about how to choose a dog breed for your lifestyle. This book also has lots of natural prevention remedies included and how to PREVENT pesky problems like fleas and ticks from invading your home and your pets. One of the things I educate pet owners on is prevention being the key and that is done through a strong immune system by feeding and supplementing properly. I always tell them that once your pet is diseased you'll need to see a veterinarian and then undo the illness and disease if you can, then build your pet back up. Dr. Pitcairn shares a lot about prevention and that thrilled me! That is the answer and key to keeping our pets healthy. He shares about natural feeding which is another big issue I like to tackle with...

Comprehensive on diet & health
I'd reviewed the 2nd edition version when I was looking into a more natural diet for my puppies on the advice of my holistic vet. In fact I was using the diet until my youngest started gaining weight and they were worried that the grains were causing the weight gain. I switched to raw meat and pureed veggies instead. Turns out that she was low thyroid. The diets are still heavy on grains. Great for the majority of dogs I'm sure. The upside is that there are nutritional analysis of all the diets included so you know why you're including each of the components. There are also special diets included for allergies, weight loss and gain.I also like the information on various health issues and vaccinosis that is included.

Very informative yet easy to read and interpret
I found this book when I was desperate to help my dog who was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur. This book has been an incredible resource for me. I love how all the information on recommended herbs, diets, etc. are backed up with a professional's name and phone number (many times). I understand that there is a time for conventional medicine but I have always been inclined to go the "alternative or natural" way. After reading this book, I am extremely happy to say that my dog is doing incredible and has barely a trace of a heart murmur left. My vet even asked me what I had done between 6 month doctor visits for such drastic results. If anyone cares about their pet/best friend as I do, this book will hold the supreme honor on your bookshelf. Please share this information with others.

Where was this great book 10 years ago?
This wonderful book change my life and my new puppy's life for the best. I've checked other documents on this subject before but I couldn't bring myself to spend the money to buy any of them. When I went to the store to look at the book, it was so clear and easy to read. I glanced at the chapter on allergies to compare what I had seen in other books and it was so complete. A whole chapter as opposed to a paragraph or a page in the others. It's full of informations, products and phone numbers, where to find a holistic vet. in your area, etc. ect. Every pet owner in the world should read this book.

The world of veterinary medicine is changing. People are realizing that if alternative medicine is better for them, it's better for their pets, too. Dogs are visiting acupuncturists, chiropractic doctors, and homeopaths. Still, many dog owners are unaware that such simple measures as changing their pet's diet and using vitamins, herbs, and other natural cures can help prevent or heal ailments ranging from excessive scratching to depression to a host of serious diseases.

The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs is both an introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural healing methods, treatments, and foods now available for dogs. Author Martin Zucker offers advice from dozens of holistic practitioners and licensed veterinarians, who share their recipes, insights, and "prescriptions." Here dog owners will find information on everything from nutritional supplements to massage therapy, as well as how these treatments can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional medications and surgical techniques. Good Intro to Natural Remedies for Dogs
Martin Zucker has interviewed over thirty holistic vets for this book. They share which supplements, dietary changes, herbs, homeopathic remedies, or flower essences they have found to be effective for conditions ranging from arthritis and cancer to parasites and yeast infections. If you've been into natural rearing for a while, few of the suggestions will be new to you, but the book is nonetheless a nice resource. In addition to the A-Z index of canine health problems and suggested natural remedies, there are brief chapters introducing various holistic therapies (herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, flower essences, acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage techniques), plus chapters on vaccinations/titers and nutrition. However, while it's great that the holistic vets interviewed for this book are advocating fresh food diets, the information presented in the chapter on homemade meals is not sufficient to enable anyone to prepare a balanced homemade...

A Must Have!
This book is, fortunately, very inexpensive. I think this is so it could be in the homes of most dog owners. This book explains a lot of health issues that could happen to your dog during its life time so it's good to have this book to prepare. There are a lot of photos that are relevant to the text, and also includes a number of x-rays of several dogs. The book is comprised of three main sections.1. How to have a healthy dog(the weekly check, traveling with your dog, vaccinations, worming, dental care, training & exercise, etc.)2. Guide to health problems(every/most types of diseases, such as skin, digestive, liver, kidney, urinary, reproductive, hormonal, etc.)3. First Aid and emergencies(first aid, collapse, lameness, wounds, bites & stings, poison, toiling, vomiting, vaginal discharge, and euthanasia.)Aside from veterinarians who should already know everything in this book, I would recommend...

    Pet owners, read this book!!
If you do not to read, hire someone to read it for you!! Your pets will thank you.I lost a cat to cancer two years ago. My feeling that I was somehow responsible for his demise at such a young age wasn't entirely grief related. For instance, was there something wrong with feeding an animal the same old stuff day and night for his/her entire life, often dried stuff at that? If so, what other options were there? And how about tap water? If we the people are concerned about drinking it, what about our pets? Inquiries about diet to everyone, vets included, almost always elicit the same response: do not feed table food or "scraps." Trouble is, most of us just do not have a scientific and/or medical background with which to argue the point. Dr. Goldstein discusses food and tap water and how it affects health in this book. All that is required for reading this book is an open, active mind and the ability to strive for something better. People who have added lots...

Wonderful Introduction to Holistic Pet Care
While written for the average pet owner who is not familiar with terms such as vaccinosis or nosodes, even those of us who have been into natural rearing for a long time can find some useful information in this book. The section on heartworm, for instance, is excellent. Few vets are even aware of the fact that alternative heartworm prevention and treatment methods exist. Also excellent: the chapters on vaccinations and the nature of disease. The chapter on nutrition points the reader in the right direction (i.e., away from processed pet foods and toward homeprepared fresh food diets), but there's not enough information to enable readers to formulate a balanced homemade diet for their dogs or cats (Dr. Pitcairn's book is better in that regard). Dr. Goldstein is not a classical homeopath and some people may object to his use of homeopathic remedies. Nonetheless, his A-Z guide to canine/feline ailments and their possible cures is thorough and full of useful...

This will change your views of the veterinary profession!
I have been providing our dogs with alternative health treatments since 1995. I was fed up with conventional care--too many pills that merely masked underlying illnesses and no real treatment. Our dogs have glowing health and everyone remarks on their vigor & beautiful coats. Dr. Goldstein, because of his successes with cancer & chronic illnesses, has conventional veterinarians quaking in their boots. So much of medicine is run by the profit motive, totally denying the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors and vets. Think of the marketing of pet foods and vaccinations in the office of the vet--two of the biggest money-makers in the industry. It is no wonder those boots are quaking. I implore you to read this book for the sake of your pets' health.
