This door has a 3 1/2 " air gap between the flaps when install in a normal exterior door. So, understand that it has an 1 /3/4" bulge on each side of the door rather than flush with the door. The exterior side has a pinch weld seal that mates up to the door that it is being installed in to help seal it against the door. Great design! Sealing the two halves upon installation with a small amount of 100% silicon will help seal the install and provide greater longevity of the door it is installed in. Also the integrity of the dog door itself. I live in central Illinois where the anual average wind speed is 17mph. Second try for doggie door, looks like we got it right this time
We purchased this door about 6 months ago to replace a PetSafe "smart door" that was an epic failure (see reviews here) Our weather is "Ruff" in terms of heat rather than cold, so I can't speak to the door's ability to block cold. But in mid-summer Texas heat, we've found very little air escaping in or around the door.Our dog has easy access in and out and she goes in and out A LOT. Every squirrel must be chased! The flaps are holding up well so far and we are pleased enough that we are buying another one for a newly constructed house.Get it right the first time and try this door!

Great door with the dual flaps. Flaps last about 14 months due to sag, the weight of the extra large flaps stretch the mounting holes at the top. Also the sides of the flaps begin to curl, or as some call "potato chip" so it does not seal on the side brushes. When the flaps sag they whack the frame mounted magnet bar, which move up and down to meet the metal bar on the bottom of the flap, and will wear the top of the plastic encased magnet bar (replacement part available). Maybe an extra strip of plastic along the sides and top would reduce side curling and reduce sagging at the top.

Good door, easy to install
Purchased medium unit for four bichons to use. Door is very weatherproof, seals well. We are using in Kansas, very windy, have not noticed significant drafting from door despite being in an insulated three car garage. Installation works well, consists of two halves which slide together in the middle. Fit well in 2x4 stud insulated wall.My only concern with this unit is that the two pieces (the exterior and interior) slide together in the middle, which leaves a non-sealed joint. Potentially, water or dirt could get into this joint and leak into the wall cavity. I pumped my joint full of silicone sealant to try to minimize or prevent this, but something you will want to consider particularly in a wet climate.

It was highly recommended by a friend who was a contractor.Previously, I had modified a Petsafe in-door dog door to go through the wall and was having problems with bees and outside air.This unit did not need any modifications to go through the wall. I did not need to trim the wall hole on the outside or inside. It went in like a dream.The new door has an inside and an outside seal. I do not have air loss when the door is closed. The plastic doors do not show all the dog drool and slobber like the old door.The dog door also has an internal lock. I read many, many product descriptions and reviews before purchasing this item and I couldn't be more pleased. We have a 600 sqft bonus room off our kitchen that we keep our three cats in at night and while we are at work to cut down on the furniture destruction and vomit stains. :o) (Hey, just being honest here) Our bonus room is unheated and we were racking up the power bill in the evenings trying to keep the door open so the cats could come and go to the food and litter pans. After reading about different styles of cat doors, we choose this one - the soft flap doesn't snap on their tails or paws like some other products with hard plastic flaps and the slide-down and snap-in cover door to keep it closed functions perfectly. The Ideal Pet Door with Telescoping Frame Medium Size 7 by 11.25 is a great product for small dogs & large cats. We have a 17 pound cat as well as a smaller one and this works very well for both of them. They are constantly going in and out and we wanted them to be able to get into shelter when the weather was bad or when we were not at home. We installed this in a wall in our garage and built a frame for it rather than spending almost as much for the kit as we paid for the door. It worked out very well. It is pretty easy to install if you are handy because you do have to do some cutting whether it is in the wall or a door. The magnetic flap works great and closes well. Having the clear flap is perfect because my cats usually have to look out for a few minutes to make sure it is safe and I don't think they would use one that they could not see out. This is my second time to buy this door.The first one, my dog ate the flap when I locked her outside and she got mad. I bought a different brand to replace it that she couldn't destroy. it was a nonflexible harder flap, but when we watched the neighbors dog, that flap would WHAP the secong dong in the nose when trying to follow mine out the doggie door. So the second dog became scared and wouldn't go near it.That's why I recomend this product over the others, no WHAP on the trailing K-9s.Cons:1) Both of these that I've bought have had about a 1/8" gap on at least one side of the plastic flap (allowing cold air in). I have worked to seal it with various strippings but haven't gotten it perfect yet (other dog doors that I've used have better seals).2) Lockout mechanism has to be stored seperately (it is not attached unless you slide it in place). The perfect dog door
This was easy to install- we followed the instructions and it was in the door in about 10 minutes. The dogs love it-and I love that we can close the door at night so that outside animals and cats can't enter our home. I suggest adding caulking on the outdoor edge- but other than that we love it and the price could not be beat. This fit our dogs (69 and 49lbs- both 10.5" chests).

This door was worth the money. I wish it would have come with a paper template for cut placement. A measuring tape and a good magic marker did the trick. My dog is a 100 pound Rotti, not huge for the bread. He fits through the door, but there's not a lot of room at the shoulders. Other than that, the door works perfectly.

LOVE IT!
We purchased this to replace our old, battered dog door. The difference is incredible! This dog door is well made and also looks nice. Basically it made our old dog door seem like an open window... the floor is much warmer now and so is the whole room. We have a german shepherd, boxer and mini poodle - the shepherd is on the larger side and had us a little worried she wouldn't fit through, but she did. Keep that in mind if you have a large dog, it says "up to 100 lbs" on the box. My shepherd is probably right around 100 lbs.

This is a great product. I live in TX and it keeps the heat / Cold / Wind from coming in the house unlike the other dog doors that have only one flap.This door needs a locking function! Its big so even my kids go through it. That would not stop a criminal!I am creating a bar that can attach to the screw holes to allow me to drop the bar accross the hole. Be Cautious About Measuring!
We like this door and it does seem to work well, but be advised that the template we got with the large size door was apparently sized only against the flap opening itself, and was not large enough to accommodate the entire insert frame of the dog door. We had to cut an extra two inches out of the bottom of the kitchen door to make it fit. Luckily, we had some space to work with. My husband is a mechanic and carpenter and knows what he's doing, so it's not like he can't read plans and attacked this job with a pair of salad tongs and a nail file. The paper template shows that the outside edge of the template is to be used when cutting the opening for the large door, but again, be aware that you're going to need more space than that to make the assembled frame fit. Also, the thermal flap does not attach and detach quickly. If you're going to use the thermal flap only in the winter and leave it off during the summer, you'll have to take the outside face off the dog door, unscrew the...

OK but not a draft-stopper
The installation went fine, but, like most everyone else, we did not use the flimsy plastic screws that came with the door. The plastic screws were so soft that they flexed like old string beans. The main disappointment is that this door does not stop drafts at all! The weatherstripping is so small that it does virtually nothing. And, if any sort of breeze blows toward the flap, the flap sails open as if an invisible dog were standing there. We knew that it isn't an insulated pet door but would have liked better performance than it offers. Heavier duty weatherstripping and/or magnet could do the trick. Next time, we will buy a serious weather handling pet door.
