Fantastic photographs!
I have purchased this book for my 5-year-old son, who dreams of becoming a marine biologist and is very fond of all the sea creatures, including crabs. He was overjoyed with this book and its fantastic, colorful photographs. There isn't a lot of writing, which keeps small children more interested and focused, in a way. But I still wish the pages contained a little more short facts about the crabs. My son had some questions, which could have been answered briefly right there, instead of me searching wikipedia for answers. Other than that, very good book, and my son is happy.

Small in size, But BIG in Taste, These Crabs caught just after molting (before the new shell has had time to harden) are prepared as soft shell crabs. Soft shell crabs are prepared by first cutting out the gills, face, and guts. The crab is then battered in flour, egg, and seasoning, then fried in oil until crispy. The result can be served as an entre', or in a sandwich. When served between bread slices or crackers, the legs stick out on either side, and the entire crab is consumed, legs and all. Fun Guide for Families
We bought this book last summer while vacationing on the Outer Banks. Using Blue Crabs, Catch `em, Cook `em, Eat `em, my family was able to catch plenty of crabs and prepare some very tasty meals. Solid guide, on a simple obsession
Last year I got a new obsession, crabbing. And when I say "obsession," it's not hyperbole - after I went on the docks in Long Island and New Jersey for the first time in July I was in crab overdrive for the next 3 months, only foiled when I wrecked my car on Southern State Parkway in October on my way out to the Captree docks. I then went into withdrawal and finally remission by Christmas, helped along by my current obsession - reading about crabs.That said, I must say that most of the joy of crabbing is simply pulling up a trap and seeing what's in it (besides blue crabs, I caught spider crabs, leopard crabs, hermit crabs, puffers, croakers, baby bluefish and one summer fluke), so there's not much an instructional book can tell you. I'd even venture to say the subtitle "Catch `Em, Cook `Em, Eat `Em" conveys the necessary instructions sufficiently.But the book did tell me a few things I didn't know from 3 months of crabbing, like some alternate methods of...

I'm not an expert on Asian ingredients, so years ago when I ran across a post touting Three Crabs Fish Sauce on a blog called The Perfect Pantry , I was more than happy to listen to Lydia's fish sauce recommendations.

The claws are put to the mouth one after another, as one claw reaches the mouth the other is picking up another piece of food. I never would have described crabs as interesting or fun to watch, until I saw Sally Lightfoot Crabs while visiting the Galapagos. They have five sets of legs (ten legs in total) four sets along the sides and one set in front. Young Sally Lightfoot crabs are black with red spots, they take on more red with each new change of shell. As they find a little piece of food they pick it up with one claw and quickly put it in their mouth, while the other claw is busy doing the same thing. Sally Lightfoot Crabs (Grapsus Grapsus) are a common sight in the Galapagos and are a joy to watch. While I was watching them crawl over the rocks I was surprised to see that they could jump from one rock to another.

Dad also had about 6 crab traps that he'd check once a week or so. You'd pull up the trap while barnacles squirted water on you, bring it on to the boat and take the angry crabs out with a pair of tongs. After that I'd have to clean the guts out of the crabs on the front yard with a hose, then bring all the fish and crab guts down to the river for disposal. Now of course, I'd kill for some blue crabs (that I don't have to prepare or clean or anything, of course), and haven't even considered going to McDonald's in forever. I manage to go fishing with my dad once or twice a year, and, like men, we don't really talk about anything important, just sort of sit there next to each other and let the time pass while we catch fish. Dad usually handled the crab wrangling part.
