Probably The Best I've Read On Behavioral Problems...
, Feliway (75mL) Spray and This Book started me and my cat- a 2 year old scottish fold- on the road to recovery after I found she'd been peeing out of the box for some time. She's extremely timid.I consider myself pretty hands-on & knowledgeable about all things cats- I've never had a 'pee-er- but this book had not 1, not 2, but SEVERAL important points and things to try I hadn't known or thought of.The importance of interactive playtime and bonding is stressed and Ihave seen a change already. I would highly recommend this book before you spend tons of money on flower remedys, and please, please always remember it's NOT the cat so do not ever punish, grumble, or emit any sort of negativity your cat will feel.If you only get one book I'd get this one- I got 3 others- twisted...

Can't miss with this author!
Pam Johnson-Bennett is one of the best authors in the newly emerging field of cat behavior and this book is no exception. She offers no-nonsense, practical ways of understanding and dealing with your cat's quirks and problems. Her solutions are rarely the "QUICK AND EASY" variety (if you wanted that, I guess you should have gotten a pet rock). But this book goes a long way toward helping you understand your complex and mysterious little housemate. If you take the time to follow her instructions and do what she says, you will get results. Do it for your cat!

An Encyclopedia of Feline Behavior
I had picked up one of the author's older books a while ago and was pretty impressed, but it was mostly a collection of stories. So, while interesting, it was no where near complete. This book, on the other hand, is practically an encyclopedia of feline behavior. VERY cool. She starts with body language, her recommendations for setting up their environment and building confidence, and then goes onto common problems and how to solve them. The only real blank is that she seems to assume that your cat is used to and at least somewhat trusts YOU. The section on a shy cat assumes that the cat is afraid of visitors.I just skimmed it, so perhaps it's in one of the introductory sections that I missed (like the play therapy section, which she covered a bit in her other book so I didn't read it in this one). I'll reread it more in depth later and update.I really like her approach, though, because she does not recommend discipline that the cat will...

Mastering the Unmasterable Minds of Cats
Steve Dale takes on the magic mystery of the most capricious of creatures of the pet kingdom, the cat in this very well presented GOOD CAT! PRACTICAL ANSWERS TO BEHAVIOR QUESTIONS. Likely most readers will sigh and pick up this book only with the foregone conclusion that no one understands or can control the behavioral idiosyncrasies of the felines of the world. Cats eat, sleep, live their own lives with only the slightest deference to the owner when it is dinner time. Until now.Dale's book is based on his radio show investigations of cat behavior as it affects those who listen to him requesting any help they can get. The chapters delineate the approach Dale takes in not only coping with but (really!) altering cat behavior: the chapters are Training your Kitten: Practice makes Perfect; Adoption is a wonderful Option; It's possible to train cats, more possible they will train you; Let's Party - Play is every cat's Passion; Timid Tabbies; Feline Fears -Scaredy Cats can be...

THE Cat's Meow!!!
Steve Dale has put together a remarkable compendium of sensible, plain-speak, valuable information and advice on how cat owners solve some of the most perplexing "problems" that cats can present to their people. I was a-mew-sed by his dedication and also happy to see the wonderful piece by Betty White, loong time animal advocate. Many of these "problems" in this book are just cats being cats - but, to an owner who has no idea of what is going on, or how it can be solved, these problems can send a cat into the shelter, with, in too many cases, a visit to the stainless steel table, and then a final trip out the back door. It's sad to think that people can think that they have offended their cat by what they "said" to the cat -- when in almost all instance, the cat is just responding to stimuli that us mere humans would not even notice. It is also sad to note that some people inadvertantly allow their cats to suffer pain and illness by not realizing that there could be a...

What cats are able to learn, and how to care for them
I had believed cats were difficult to train because, with the exception of climbing on things, they often seemed bored with training.Author Steve Dale explains what people get out of kitten socialization classes and hundreds of other things on domestic cats. He succinctly cites authoritative literature on the subject and quotes certified cat behavior consultants and other related professionals.Mostly the format is Q&A based on true accounts. Some advice is common-sense such as getting a 2nd cat to improve the behavior of the 1st cat. Some is more advanced, including cat agility training. Experience and research show that cats have great capacity to acquire new behaviors through interspecies communication. This is a fun and easy book to read. It helped me understand how cats fit into families and benefit others.

It really works!
My cat had taken a serious disliking to my boyfriend: clawing, biting, and hissing at anyone nearby, provoking brawls with his littermate, howling through the night and urinating in all his hiding spots. He'd rub against our legs one moment but lash out violently when we reached for him. I was crushed at the thought of having to give away my beloved pet; then I found this book.Author Pam Johnson-Bennett knows cats. She offers a complete dictionary of how cats communicate their mood, where problem behavior starts, and simple solutions to ease tension and modify behavior. She offers several strategic checklists for anticipated situations as well as existing problems. Don't be fooled by the title either; Pam offers excellent advice on cat-human interactions, too.We made three little changes and enjoyed INSTANT success. The urinating stopped immediately. Within a week, the violence decreased to a minimum. A month later, the cat was taking treats from my boyfriend's...

A good behavioral book for multicat homes
I am struggling with a number of feline behavioral disorders in my own family, but this book truly shed light on methods to correct these issues. From the beginning, Johnson-Bennett takes the standpoint of analyzing cat behaviors in the context of a multicat household. She covers issues such as litterbox use, timidness, aggression and dicipline. From reading this book, I added many new regimes to my treatment plan for remeding with cat-cat interaction - using catnip, increasing playtime, training methods, etc. Armed with the knowledge from this book, I went forth and began working to help my cat through her behavioral problems, and after only a few short weeks the issues were resolved! I completely credit this book with giving me the knowledge and understanding to better tackle this problem and create a peaceful environment for both my cats and my family. The book is an easy read and chocked full of information for multi-cat households. I would recommend it to...

my cats are thanking me
we have three cats in our house hold because we just added a new kitten. Since the older one didnt take the last new cat too well. we thought we better look into this. I found out that for the last two cats we indroduced them very well. however there was a lot of insight about hierarchy, toys, and food and litter preferances that we didnt know about. Also the feliway plug in thing is a LIFESAVER!!! Our old grumpy cat has turned into a calm cat who we rarely ever here hiss anymore. He used to hiss when he thought about the other cats. Now he even lets them sniff him and he doesnt mind. He also stopped spaying inside. Now he still gets into fights outside, but while he is inside we know he is happy!

In this companion to her successful introduction to cat behavior Think Like a Cat, Pam Johnson-Bennett, the award-winning author and feline behaviorist, shows how adding another cat to your home does not have to be the start of a kitty apocalypse. Although cats are often misunderstood as natural loners, Johnson-Bennett shows how to plan, set up, and maintain a home environment that will help multiple cats—and their owners—live in peace. Cat vs. Cat will help readers understand the importance of territory, the specialized communication cats use to establish relationships and hierarchies, and how to interpret the so-called “bad behavior” that leads so many owners to needless frustration. Offering a wealth of information on how to diffuse tension, prevent squabbles and ambushes, blend two families, or help the elder kitty in your family, Cat vs. Cat is a welcome resource for both seasoned and prospective guardians of cat families large and small.

A great resource!
I just got my first cat (she's 6 months old) and have been searching around desperately ever since for a good, solid reference book full of everything I need to know to keep my cat healthy and happy. A kind of "Our Bodies, Our Selves" for my pet, you could say. But most of the books I found were all pictures, no substance.I stumbled across this one when I found it on a sale table. I thought it was just going to be a handbook on cat psychology, but it turns out it's much, much more! This book has information on just about everything you would ever need to know about taking care of your kitty. It's got a chapter on every subject I had a question about, plus informational lists (like, of which houseplants are poisonous), very detailed and easy-to-follow instructions (like, on how to do CPR on your cat), and extremely innovative ideas and solutions to common problems (like, how to keep your cat off your kitchen counters).I heartily recommend this book to...

A Great Book for Cat Owners
There is so much misinformation about cats that it's a welcome treat to have a book that gives us insight into things that are important to them. Cats love security. They love a familiar setting. They like a routine, but they can become bored if we don't play with them regularly. The author has fine suggestions on effective play. She also has excellent thoughts on how cats try to communicate with us. It took me a long time to figure out what my cat was trying to tell me, but you can get it nicely from this book. The volume has useful information on cat health, but its great value is in helping you think like a cat. Every cat owner would be wise to have a copy.

Excellent Book for Owners of Cats of All Ages
I checked out this book at the library, and I am now buying it. Don't think that this is a book for someone who JUST bought a cat! I have owned a cat for 5 years and I still found all the information in this book helpful. Pam explains everything in clear, concise words, so you don't get caught of in the middle of the book thinking "What the heck is a cytoplamatic inherited gene?" I strongly urge you to buy this book whether you are about to buy your first kitten or if you have been a cat owner for 20 years.

Not a Bad Little Book!
The author seems to know her stuff. The book has an excellent lay out. Lots of pictures, easy to navigate, wonderful index, sort of like a FAQ on cat behavior.Everyone from the novice to experienced cat owner is likely to learn something about the subject. The subject itself is a little bland. Before you cat lovers all get upset about this remark, let me explain. According to Bailey the majority of cat behavior is rather simple, basic needs for safety, exploration, food, etc. Cat behavior is also rather simple: tail up or down, rub off scent, etc. This makes portions of the book repetitious. This is not a complaint. It is better to be truthful and a little bland than to invent a bunch of human response and lay those on the cat.All in all it's a good book and worth owning. Cat owners won't be disappointed.
