This is a great, cheap to run filter!
Unlike other filters that force you to spend money on new filters pads every two weeks, spending a lot on money you didn't think you would have to, this filter does not require replacement filter pads. Instead, it has a block of foam that is used to trap the dirt in the water. Every two weeks, simple clean the foam in water by squeezing it a few times! Just do it in your water changing bucket with de-chlorinated water.You can change the carbon filter whenever you choose to. In fact, it is not needed all that much. I have run my tanks without carbon for a month at a time, no big deal. If the water starts to look yellow or brown, it is time to change it and put in some fresh carbon.

Great Filter
Hi..if you are reading this and looking for a new or replacement filter, AquaClears are great. My 70 (300) is extremely quiet and my aquarium is crystal clear. Even though the filter comes with sponge, carbon and BioMax, you can set it up which ever way you want. The sponges can be washed in aquarium water to save a few dollars and maintain your biological filter. Cleans easily. The old number represented the gallons per hour. The new number represents the maximum size aquarium. Good luck.

A very effective, powerful, and inexpensive filter.
There is so much to say about this filter, it's hard to know where to start.I bought this filter to replace a very ineffective Marineland Pengiun HOB filter. I have a 20 gallon tank, but have a heavy bioload due to a dozen or so fish being born in our tank (thank you Petsmart). The issues we ran into with the Penguin filter were many (see my review), so I looked for a more powerful and configurable filter. The Aquaclear 70 fit the bill.The housing has plastic walls that I think are a bit thin. I feel the need to be very careful with it when I take it apart and put it back together. That's about the only critical thing I have to say about this filter. It has a dial on the back to help keep the filter level. The impeller and motor can be easily replaced with a simple twist.You get two intakes with this unit, so you can have it at mid-level, or extend it to get closer to the bottom. Been very good to me.
Did my research and people couldnt tell the difference from the Emperor 400. So i bought this since it's price tag was way cheaper than the 400. Ive been running this for about 2 months on my 75 gallon tank. I have an Oscar and they're messy eaters and leave particles in the water from some certain types of foods. The particles dissapear after 20 minutes due to the power filter's water gallon suction ratio. I completely love how silent it is. You need to fill the tank up to at least the waterfall lips of the filter so you wont hear the water splashing. Good good stuff here.

Best filter EVER. Don't listen to the 1-star crowd.
I have had my Penguin 200 with the bio-wheel for about a month now. Before I bought it, I did some research and read the reviews about this particular model. I saw all the bad press people were giving it about it's "restart problems" and "Bad Connections" etc. etc. and I have to say, the only problem with the P-200 are the short-bus riders who don't have their water ALL THE WAY UP TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OUTPUT AREA.5*s*t*a*r*s, the bio-wheel is super, it isn't noisy (you know it's on, but it doesn't stop you from reading a book), and my fish have personally told me that they love it. My fish talk to me.

Great filtration
The best I have ever used . I have two 30gl. African Cichlid set-ups that I keep over crowded to cut down on the fighting for territory and a 30 gal . community tank and these filters do a great job with the bio-load of each . The bio-wheels do a great job of polishing the water , and a great place to grow good bacteria, this is why they slow down after they been used for awhile , the Bio-wheels build up bacteria and muck , simply rinse them off in dechlorinated water that is the same temp. as your tank water so you do not kill off the bacteria and they will continue to serve you well . Easy to change filters , which I change only one at a time so as not to remove all the bacteria in my filters . And even after my own laziness of going weeks without cleaning it , it will run smooth and whisper quiet . I have never had a problem with noise on any of my 3 Penguin 350 filters , after a water change or power outage just a little shot of water in it to prime it and it starts right up...

Best HOB Filter
I have used several different HOB filters throughout the past, but this one is the best. It offers unparalleled filtration, a great value, very easy to use/setup and also runs very quiet. The media configurability, ability to swap different stages at different times and the wet/dry trickle feature really make it a winner. Best small power filter
I've tried many different filter types in conjunction with small (10-20 gal) aquariums over many years and until recently had narrowed my choices down to either the Aqua Clear or the Penguin Bio-Wheel. The Aqua Clear filtered water through media, but never really trapped much debris. While the Bio-Wheel did both, filtered and trapped, it was noisy and the replacement media used a lot of plastic and they were relatively expensive.I recently decided to try the Fluval C2, made by Hagens, who also makes the AC. In fact, when unpacking the C2, I first thought it was the AC in different packaging, as the form factor is similar and it has a familiar look to it. But look and feel is where the similarities end. I've been running it for a month now in/on a 15 gal setup and I'm very happy with this filter. The flow rate is adjustable and for a small 2.5 gallon aquarium, it needs to be set to the lowest setting. The filter is very quiet and I have to put my ear up the aquarium to hear it running without the aerator hose attached. The Best Small tank filter EVER
I have a 360* View tank, and of course its a cylinder and u cant fit a normal filter. I was planning on buying an exterior canister filter for $60 since all the filter i looked at were far to large to fit in the aquarium without hindering my fish's space to swim. Then i thought id give it one last shot at looken and i found this tiny little filter. Its small but packs alot of filter power. You can use the sponges that elite sells or even make one of your own, so your not stuck buying premade filter packs. I have a 3.5 gallon tank and it was cloudy looking since the filtration system was lacking, and after adding this filter its crystal clear. Im rlly impressed. It works but needs some modification
I have a 2 1/2 gallon bowl and I bought this to clean the water up. Pros- It picks up bigger particles. Cons- It is way too strong of a current. My betta was having some serious troubles against it even when the valve was barely open. Here's my suggestion to make it a great and cheap filter. Step one: Buy extra filter sponges, they only cost around $6 and trust me it's worth it. Step two: Take one of the extra sponges and place it on the end of the out-put cone. Step three: Buy some mini packets activated charcoal and place it inside the filter next to the intake area, underneath the inner sponge. With the sponge on the outside my betta loves swimming around it and against the now very gentle current and he can still float on top easily.

Great - but a warning
The Penguin Bio-wheel pumps are great: quiet, effective and long-lasting. (I have a 170 filter in a 39 gallon tank.) These size C filters are widely available, but the Amazon price is much lower than at my not-so-nearby pet store.A word of warning. The day after changing my filter three months ago fish started dying. Next morning my 6" long Plecostomus was dead. Then three Clown Loaches, each about 5 " long. Within a week I had lost 18 of my 20 fish. Yet there was no sign of disease.A water test and much internet searching finally pointed out what I had done wrong. I had neglected my tank for a few weeks. In a rush to catch up, I siphoned out about 30 percent of the water (more than usual), did a "better" than usual job of siphoning up detritus from the gravel. Then - my biggest mistake - I replaced the Penguin filter too! The result is the water chemistry changed too quickly. The Nitrates spiked to a deadly level. I bought a load of these and saved a ton of money. Petsmart ships, so no amazon prime savings. Still, what a deal. My big tank takes 8 filters. I was avoiding changing them because of cost.Funny, I changed all 8 at the same time and threw my tank out of whack. Too much algae and goo left the system with the old filters. It's a filter, not a lot to say
It's a filter, it seems to do what it is supposed to although I have no way to scentifically test the efficiency of the activated charcoal.Now the tank has settled down, the water is bright and clear. I do a water refresh every two weeks and change the filters alternate weekends. Sometimes I wash debris off it between changes.Prices from Amazon are much better than from local stores.What more can I say?
