Even better than I expected
I read all the prior reviews and I don't need to repeat any of the many virtues the others raved about. It's all true. (I'm really surprised any restaurant below a five star would use them for food service. They must have a metal detector at the exit. See Pete's review dated October 16, 2007.)The actual "product dimensions" are: 4 1/2" inside diameter; 7 1/4" handle end to handle end; 2 1/4" deep. They hold 16 oz. with 2 oz. (or 1/2" height) remaining to the rim. And, FWIW, each one weighs 1 lb., 4 5/8 oz.Unlike the 7" oval bakers which carry the shiny stainless across the bottom, these have spun bottoms just like the pans. However, for anyone interested, they do not have the magnetic layer necessary for induction.Very, very nice. I'm glad I ignored the price and bought them.

The "perfect" soup bowl
My wife & I had ordered a shrimp bisque at a nearby restaurant. The bisque was outstanding and it was served in the all-clad stainless soup bowls. We both commented on how the bisque stayed nice and hot until the very last spoonful!Later that week I searched Amazon and ,naturally, they had the lowest price. We now cook our soups in them -on the range or in the oven and bring them right to the table. We put them in the dishwasher and they sparkle like new.In my opinion, there is nothing better to serve soup in.

These are decent little soup ramekins. They are made for both stovetop and oven use. In addition to soup ramekins, they also make fine butter melters. While they sport the "All Clad" label on the handles like other other All Clad pots, they aren't made in Canonsburg, PA, but rather in China, according to the labels on the boxes. That's probably why they're so much cheaper than other All Clad cooking ware.

Beautiful and the Perfect Size, But Don't Forget the Barkeeper's Friend !!!
With a budget of only $100, I was torn between getting a 12-qt. Cuisinart or this 8-qt. Calphalon. I first went with the Cuisinart but returned it because the strainer had black metal residues within the holes, and felt flimsy. I tried to wash the residues out but didn't want the chance of it coming back during cooking.My purchase of the Calphalon Contemporary was immediately met with amazement because of its beauty. It looks and feels so much sturdier than the Cuisinart, and the 8-qt. fits my cooking needs. We only cook a 1-pound package of spaghetti each time, so this is the perfect size. The 12-qt. could have easily cooked 2 packages at a time, but how many times are we going to cook for a party of 10? Hardly. By the way, the spaghetti package directs us to use 4 qts of water per package.Lastly, I believe that everyone who owns stainless steel ccokware needs to always have some BARKEEPER'S FRIEND cleanser and polisher in their immediate vicinity...

Love the Pot, Not the Pasta Insert
I have had this pot for about a year and use it every day. It seems to heat evenly so I am not worried that only the bottom has an aluminum core. I love the styling and don't mind that the handles sometimes get hot. I just use oven mits. I also don't mind that the lid fits tightly without a vent, and therefore you cannot fill the pot all the way full if you are boiling water. I just don't fill it all the way and have never had a problem with it boiling over. The steamer basket is quite useful for steaming fruits and vegetables, but I haven't used the pasta insert much. The problem is that the insert is not long enough. If it were longer and nearly hit the bottom of the pan you wouldn't have to fill the pot so full when you cook pasta. Less water means less time to boil. Having to fill that pot so full to cook a little pasta is a waste of time so I usually just use a different pot. The pasta insert is collecting dust.

What a great value...I'm very pleased with this purchase!
I hesitated to buy this set because I couldn't believe the price -- $169.95 for the All-Clad stainless 6-qt stockpot, plus two All-Clad ramekins, a ladle and cookbook. I thought perhaps it was a thinner version (as is the case with the 12" covered non-stick fry pan I purchased from Williams-Sonoma recently for $99 -- but love nonetheless because it heats and cooks just as well as my thicker 10" fry pan but is lighter). But this is the real deal! I am so pleased with this purchase. I haven't used the stockpot yet but it is identical to the one in my local Williams-Sonoma store. I love the ramekins. When I get home from work, I have used them to heat up left-overs on my gas stove -- healthier than using the microwave -- and then I eat right from them. They heat the food beautifully and clean up easily, leaving fewer dishes to wash. They are heavy and thick and aesthetically pleasing to look at and hold. The box said that the stockpot was made in the USA (PA) but the stockpot...

Value priced for All-Clad quality
Like Eileen from Boston, I was surprised to see this set at this price. Just the pot costs nearly as much on its own, but this set has a ladle, 2 half-quart ramekins, and a great cookbook (printed in Canada). And the pot is not thin. The day this set arrived, I immediately made a recipe from the included book, chicken/orzo/tomato/zucchini stew, using canned broth and tomatoes, and it was great. The pot is 6qt, right-weight, made in the USA, and while the lid's made in China (every lid/non-bonded item is, per their website, so the ladle & ramekins are from China), it fits perfectly on the pot. I've had that same good lid-fit experience with their braiser pan. I highly recommend reading the Care & Use page on All-Clad's web site, as it covers preheating, using low to medium heat, etc. Also see All-Clad's site for a FAQs page which answers 23 questions. pot ok - concept not
I bought this set to replace another pot of similar size. I figured that this would be a great deal - it's got inserts and it's from Calphalon at a great price too. The tempered glass cover fits well and is helpful because you can see inside without removing the cover although it spits when the pot is at a full and rapid boil. It's a stainless steel piece so it's not dark when you look inside like many other Calphalon pieces. The aluminum bottom is not the same as on their commercial or professional lines. It's a heavy-duty aluminum bottom attached to a stainless steel pot. Even though the pot along with the bottom is thicker and heavier than most other lines that do the same, it did not heat up like other Calphalon pieces that I own. Still, I cooked a stew at a slow simmer for six hours and it didn't burn at the bottom. A good thing. This is the first time that I have inserts like these and I don't think much of the big insert. Good pots BUT ...
After about a month's use, we had a major disaster with this pot. After the contents reached boiling, we turned the flame down, as the recipe said. The glass lid fit so tightly that it formed a partial vacuum, and as the pressure inside dropped, suddenly the lid shattered into zillions of tiny pieces. It totally ruined the food, of course, as well as destroying the lid.We did find a lid from another pot that we had that fit, so we use that. Otherwise it's a pretty good pot. We use the small basket a lot for steaming. The larger basket, as others have suggested, isn't very good for making pasta, but it works to just use the pot, and use the large basket as a strainer.After a few years, the pots still look quite good.But I'd suggest that you file a few grooves in the edge of the lid, to prevent an airtight seal. If you don't, you may end up with a shattered lid as we did.
